Seeing my sincerity, Luke was eventually convinced. He bore his soul to me and I listened to his heart-wrenching story which he had never revealed to anyone else before. I learnt that Luke's father had passed away when he was very young thus his mother became the sole breadwinner and had to shoulder the heavy responsibility of bringing home the bacon. As she was not well-educated, she had no choice but to do odd jobs to make ends meet. Luke's mother, who was frail and feeble, overworked herself and eventually, illness took a heavy toll on her. She was afraid to consult a doctor as she did not want to spend more money, Luke now had the responsibility to take care of his mother and his younger brother. Therefore, he did not have time to do his homework and always slept late and lacked concentration during lessons. Too embarrassed and shy to tell Mrs Lim what happened, Luke kept quiet.
